Auto coverage for drivers convicted of a DUI.

If you have been convicted of a DUI in the state of Florida, then managing your auto insurance is no easy task.  After your conviction, your existing insurer will likely drop you from coverage.  To make matters worse, the risk that you pose and the state regulations that you are subject to will prevent you from securing standard car coverage.  This forces you to secure specialty forms of Florida auto insurance.  Here’s what you need to know about auto coverage for drivers convicted of a DUI.

In the state of Florida, drivers who have been convicted of a DUI are required to secure a special form of auto coverage known as FR44 insurance.  FR44 insurance (similar to SR22 insurance in other states) offers the policyholder higher liability coverage limits to protect the public from their recklessness.  For instance, Florida state insurance minimums require drivers to carry $10,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person and $20,000 per accident.  In contrast, FR44 insurance offers the policyholder $100,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person and $300,000 per accident.

Because FR44 insurance offers such high coverage limits, policyholders will have to pay more for this coverage.  Fortunately, drivers convicted of a DUI only have to carry this form of coverage for three years.  After that, the DUI conviction will be “forgiven,” and the driver will once again be eligible for standard auto coverage.
